You know, aside from Tuskegee, and, you know, sisters whose DNA was taken from her and been used, you know, family not really compensated, I've had my own experiences in my family. My father died when I was seven. And he died at age 28, from a heart attack. And the reason he died is that when the ambulance came, there was no oxygen in the tank. And so, so that was that. He was a Black man, so back then it didn't (?) people, but it was like, oh well, no oxygen. It's just another dead Black man. And then, more recently, that my mother, my mother had a stroke in 2007. And she was in the hospital and she was doing okay with the stroke. You know, she had a little bit of cognitive problems but still able to speak and move around. But then, during that stay, they overdosed her with heparin, and she completely lost any ability to be independent, it was the speech, she got vascular dementia. So our lives completely changed because of that mistake. And again, there's no accountability for that mistake. Another Black woman? Oh, well, you know. So just in general, I'm hesitant with anything having to do with the medical world. And that's pretty much how I live my life. Like I'm careful about what I put into my body, chemicals. At my doctor's, until this year, when I started Medicare, my doctor was a Naturopath. I've always been into more alternative, natural medicine. So when I heard about the vaccine, my first response was like, uh-uh, oh no, especially since it was a new vaccine. I believe that the vaccine is probably- I believe that it works. But for me, what works now doesn't necessarily work five or 10 years from now.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://clemmonsfamilyfarminc.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1659/collection_resources/52207/file/174514#t=0.0,173.0"},{"id":"https://clemmonsfamilyfarminc.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1659/collection_resources/52207/file/174514/transcript/41655/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"For example, I work I work for a company, a nonprofit. They were a nonprofit that was supporting women who were given a drug DEF, which is a drug that was supposed to help women not have miscarriages in the 60s or 70s. So they gave the woman that drug, but then the daughters, and sometimes the granddaughters of those children develop cancer. The women develop cancer, daughters or granddaughter of the women who would give a DEF develop cancer. So I don't trust any drug that's new on the market. Even, you know, in  my own life. It's like, if I have to have a medication, when was it developed? Because I want to know. I'm not gonna take anything new. So that was my first thought when I heard about the vaccines like nope, not doing it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://clemmonsfamilyfarminc.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1659/collection_resources/52207/file/174514#t=173.0,235.0"},{"id":"https://clemmonsfamilyfarminc.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1659/collection_resources/52207/file/174514/transcript/41655/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Before I started taking care of my mother, I didn't get the flu shots. But once I did, I did get start to get the flu shot because of her. I do do the regular flu shot because it has been around. And I know I trust it, but I don't trust the new vaccine. So that's how I felt when I first heard about it. And then when it became available, my first worry was that it was going to be mandated for everyone. Because I don't want to take it, so I was like, Oh, no. Oh, no, I hope they're not gonna force me to take it especially also because I work for the health department. And so we should be setting a good example. So I was hoping they weren't gonna make us set a good example and have to get the vaccine. So that was my worry when it became available.\n\nBut then when it did become available, I guess I was sort of relieved, in a sense.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://clemmonsfamilyfarminc.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1659/collection_resources/52207/file/174514#t=235.0,304.0"},{"id":"https://clemmonsfamilyfarminc.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1659/collection_resources/52207/file/174514/transcript/41655/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Relieved, because I think it was like, well, the more people that get it, they won't be bothering me. Like, if everybody gets it. Okay, y'all go and get it, I don't want to get it so y'all go and get it. So I don't have to get it. And I was impressed the way they made the vaccines accessible to everyone, they did try really hard to get it out there. So I was impressed how they did that, and how they really tried to meet people where they were, especially trying to be sure that people of color weren't left out, which we often are. So I was impressed and sort of proud of how they did that. And once I made my decision, you know, I felt pretty relieved about it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://clemmonsfamilyfarminc.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1659/collection_resources/52207/file/174514#t=304.0,365.0"},{"id":"https://clemmonsfamilyfarminc.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1659/collection_resources/52207/file/174514/transcript/41655/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Because I've been watching, they've been making a lot of mistakes. For example, in my opinion, when they started giving the vaccine, they knew that everyone wasn't going to get the vaccine. I think  they told the people who were getting vaccinated they didn't have to wear masks anymore. I think that was a big mistake, because there were so many people who weren't vaccinated. So why would you tell anyone to stop wearing a mask, and I think that's a lot of the problems now is that they have this really- not made good decisions on managing the vaccine. Even before I consider it, they have to stop making these mistakes, you know, they have to know what they're talking about. Like, I'm not gonna- I feel good about my decision, because I can see that they like this messing up, you know, so I feel good about what I'm doing. And I am also really paranoid. So I go even above and beyond what I did when we were on lockdown. You know, you should just wear one mask. Now I'm wearing two or three. I'm still doing all the things I did when we were on lockdown to be safe, but I'm doing even more to keep myself and other people safe. I'm still wearing the gloves, wearing 2-3 masks, I don't hang out in groups, you know? So I feel like I'm doing my part to keep everybody and anyone safe. But I still feel now I feel somewhat stigmatized, because I didn't take the vaccine. And it just makes me mad and angry. The size of being a Black woman in this country, especially now with all the white supremacy that's happening, like having to deal with that type of hatred coming at me from the white haters. Now I have to deal with the haters of the people who hate me because I didn't get the vaccine. And it makes me angry. And it makes me angry that I'm just being lumped in with the crazy people who are not getting the vaccine with me. I don't think my reasons are crazy. You know, maybe they don't think their reasons are crazy either. But I don't think there's a respect. Everybody has a different reason. And everybody's reason should be respected and not ridiculed the way I think is happening.\n\nTranscribed by https://otter.ai","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://clemmonsfamilyfarminc.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1659/collection_resources/52207/file/174514#t=450.0,575.74183"}]}]}]}
